Kontera Technologies Dynamic Context

For publishers looking for an alternative or supplement to Google’s Adsense, Kontara Technologies may have the answer. Using a method they call DynamiContext, Kontera automatically turns keywords on your page into links. They also have regular contextual text ads, but this is not as interesting as the in-paragraph link ads. When your mouse hovers over one of the links, a small text ad pops up, which the user can read and click on if interested.

There are, however a couple of limitations to the system. In order to use the system, you need a minimum of 150,000 page impressions per month, and have at least 200 words per page.

I’d like to use them, but don’t think that I meet the words per page limitation.

Cheap Logos For Your Business

You can dramatically improve your web presence (and your business presence) with a professionally done logo. The problem is that professional graphic designers are not cheap—and if nothing else, I believe in doing things on the cheap (thus, this site is created entirely with free software).

Fortunately, there is a solution: Got Logos dot Com.

For just $25, you can have a professionally drawn logo done for your website or business. You simply tell them as best you can what you need, and they get to work. Turnaround time generally is 5 days.

The only catch is that there is no guarantee. For $25, you get what they give you—any revisions are another $10.

But I believe that you’re going to love what they do for you. And you can get an idea of their quality work by looking at their extensive catalog of past work.

Top Ten New Mistakes of Web Design

Jakob Nielson has a page with a list of the top ten mistakes made by web designers.

A particular beef with me are those sites that make the back button useless.

There are a couple of ways to do this. One is to have every link open in a new window. But the worst are those sites that use an immediate redirect—where you use the backbutton, and are immediately sent back to your previous location.

One of Nielson’s beefs, though, is not an issue if you are using blogging software: no archives. Most blogging software allows bloggers to easily keep their old posts.

Making Effective Use of Categories

I think that one of the secrets to making money with blogs is to break your posts into useful and effective categories.

The categories help to direct appropriate AdSense ads to your site. Otherwise, all you’re going to get is ads about blogging—which don’t pay much—and usually aren’t on topic (unless you’re blogging about blogging—a worthless exercise).

If you take a look at this site, you will notice that there are a large number of categories, each one of which has a category description at the top of the page. The category description helps to direct the appropriate ads to the page.

The category division also helps people quickly find what they want. If visitors have to work their way backwards through hundreds of posts to find what they want, they’re going to very quickly get frustrated.
